Learning Support

IAA offers comprehensive support services for students who are experiencing academic difficulty due to learning challenges. Learning Support aims at ensuring that students with identified learning needs are assisted both inside and outside of the classroom. This is achieved using a tiered approach to instruction. Our ultimate goal is for students to become self-aware, independent learners.

Support starts within the classroom where teachers and Learning Specialists collaborate to provide students with the best possible differentiated instruction in order to ensure that students’ learning variabilities are catered for. If a student is in need of further assistance, they are then referred to  Learning Support for an assessment of his/her academic strengths and weaknesses.  Results from the testing process are communicated to parents and teachers, with strategies for support in class and at home, along with any suggested interventions.

Should a student need targeted intervention, either in small groups or in a one-to-one setting, the student will be enrolled in Learning Support to receive assistance in identified areas. These areas include, but are not limited to, phonological awareness, word study, reading fluency, comprehension, written expression, mathematics and executive functioning. Occupational Therapy as well as Speech and Language services are also available on site for a separate fee.  In general, Learning Support services facilitate the development of skills and strategies that students will require to successfully access the curriculum. This is achieved through the use of research-based methodologies which are identified in the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). Student progress is monitored through the use of periodic benchmark testing and goals are adjusted as appropriate.
