President's Letter

Dear esteemed delegates of the United Nations Conventions on the Law of the Sea,
I am Nusaybah Elbusaifi, a senior at the Modern Montessori School, and I have the greatest pleasure of being your president for this year's IMUN. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea is one of the most vital and yet often undermined treaties created by the UN. While states often wield it as a strategic asset to suit their interests, it undeniably serves as a robust framework for fostering peaceful management.
UNCLOS, or "Constitutions of the Oceans," discusses complex topics such as navigation rights, territorial waters, economic exclusive zones (EEZs), and various other issues. The committee can resolve numerous international conflicts, including disputes between Turkey and Greece and issues in the South China Sea. This year, we will address two specific topics.: "Strengthening international systems and laws against piracy" and "Addressing illegal and unregulated fishing in international waters." These topics are not the usual subjects discussed in other resolution-based committees, as they involve issues in international waters. This complexity arises because no single nation has complete jurisdiction over these areas; therefore, finding solutions necessitates cooperation among multiple states, international organizations, and enforcement bodies.
I hope to alleviate any anxiety you may have about the conference and to help you enjoy it, especially within this committee. I hope each of you will learn to improve your skills in public speaking, logical debate, maintaining a human perspective, and writing effective resolutions. I believe you will leave this conference with new skills and a fresh perspective on the challenges currently facing our international waters.
Good luck!
Nusaybah Elbusaifi
The President of The United Nations on the Law of the Sea
